Homebrew Liminal Tutelari Race Details
"Death becomes them. They protect both the living and the dead. They walk in our world but see in both."
-- Parting the Veil, Chapter Nine: Inhabitants of Apostasy
Origin
The Tutelari are a product of old and powerful necromancy. Regions with a extended history of necromancy being practiced may result in the birth of a Tutelar instead of ordinary undead given the right circumstances. Specific creation of Tutelari is often difficult but not impossible.
Physical Description and Characteristics
Tutelari are undead. Liminal Tutelari can pass for their previous race and as such may be medium or small size. Their skin is cold. Their eyes are lack spirit. They require no sleep but can stand for hours without moving. They never suffer exhaustion. They may eat and drink but require no food or water to survive. They are immune to poison and disease and are resistant to necrotic damage. They do not heal normally but may be mended.
Liminal Tutelari operate within the narrow band of consciousness between wakefulness and semi-conscious sleep. They have fleeting memories and may recall skills from their previous lives. They may be of any alignment. They see both in light and dark. They are highly susceptible to suggestion and impress themselves upon their creators.
As a whole, they are the protectors of the living and the dead. But they are accepted by neither.
A Tutelar who stays within a small area for four hours receives the benefits of a long rest but may only recover one half of their hit dice through mending. A short rest confers standard benefits except no health recovery is possible.
Tutelari do not normally have intelligence, wisdom, or charisma scores above 13. They have disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws and Insight skill checks.

Undead Humanoid
Every creature in D&D, including every player character, has a special tag in the rules that identifies the type of creature they are. Most player characters are of the Humanoid type. A race option presented here tells you what your character's creature type is.
Your creature type is both Humanoid and Undead. Undead perceive you as living and may not immediately attack you if they would otherwise.
If an effect works on at least one of a creature's types, that effect can work on that creature. For example, if you are both a Humanoid and an Undead, cure wounds works on you, since the spell works on a Humanoid.
